SOLSTICE FESTIVAL
On the 21st of June each year, the summer solstice occurs; the moment the earth’s tilt toward the sun is at a maximum. Therefore, on the day of the summer solstice, the sun appears at its highest elevation at noon. It is also the longest day of the year, dawn is at 04:45 and dusk is at 21:20. However, because the sunlight is visible before the sun rises and still visible after sunset the useable daylight is much longer than these times suggest.
It is, therefore, the perfect day for naturists, sun worshippers, and anyone who likes being outdoors.
Ancient cultures knew that the sun’s path across the sky, the length of daylight, and the location of the sunrise and sunset all shifted in a regular way throughout the year. They built monuments such as the ones at Stonehenge in England and at Machu Picchu in Peru to follow the sun’s yearly progress.The Pagans celebrate the solstice, they call it Litha. Pagans Light and jump over bonfires on Midsummer’s Eve. It keeps demons away and brings good luck to lovers. Jumping over an open fire is a health and safety risk! However, at Spielplatz we do celebrate the solstice and we do light fires. No jumping. We stand and watch the flickering light, and it keeps us warm as the sun sets. The Solstice festival is the main party event of the year. The DJ provides the music and we party naked long into the evening. At midnight we go for a skinny dip in the swimming pool.
